When I was a little boy my dad got me a fish tank, because you know, fish make for good pets since they don’t have to be walked, don’t make a mess, and don’t start howling in the middle of the night. At first I was a bit disappointed because I wanted a puppy. But then I started to like watching the fish swim around in the aquarium. To this day I still very much enjoy watching fish swim about.

I left my aquarium at home when I moved out, but I carry my fascination for fish with me. And if you think about it, as long as I have a computer and access to the internet, I can always turn my monitor into a virtual aquarium.

To do so I need only get the right piece of software – like the 3PlaneSoft-developed Tropical Fish 3D Screensaver. When the computer goes idle, this screensaver becomes active and displays various tropical fish swimming around; in the background you see some beautiful underwater scenery.

You also hear music in the background. Tropical Fish 3D Screensaver plays relaxing music that goes hand in hand with the imagery. If for some reason you don’t like the music, you can turn it off by pressing the M key on the keyboard. Or you can go to the Settings pane and disable it altogether. The disappointing part is that you cannot create a playlist and have your tracks play in the background – you can do that with other 3PlaneSoft-developed screensavers.

Installation – at the time of writing this, Tropical Fish 3D Screensaver provides support for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit editions). You can install the application in English, German, French and Russian. During the installation process you are asked to install the 3Planesoft Screensaver Manager. This manager provides information about your currently installed 3PlaneSoft screensaver and about other screensaver 3PlaneSoft has to offer. The manager allows you to access the settings of all the 3PlaneSoft screensavers installed on your system. It also comes with a feature to automatically change the screensaver after a specific amount of time, or to display a different screensaver each time the computer goes idle. This manager is quite useful if you have more than one 3PlaneSoft screensaver.
Limitations – after 90 seconds a nag screen will appear. To get rid of this nag screen you have to purchase a license.
